Complex and surprising with a sweet finish

|

I tried a wonderful Riesling from Jim Barry back in 2014-2015 (probably a younger vintage) and so, as I am not a big Riesling drinker, thought I would give this one a try. It is a surprising complex Riesling that has more of a buttery colour (somewhere between Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay) and is full of flavour with a bouquet to match. The label on the bottle says "brace yourself for a (pleasant) surprise" and this is accurate. Although it starts off fruity and dry on the palate, it has a determined rather sweet finish, that I would be tempted to rate as medium sweet, rather than medium dry. Because of this contrast, it takes some getting used to, but with some patience, I enjoyed it. Some thought is required in matching with food as it will blow delicate flavours out of the water. So I suggest matching it with slightly spicy or stronger flavours that would stack up against this turbo charged Riesling. I have rated it 4, due to its surprising character, but it may not be everyone's er.... cup of tea. As it comes in a 6-pack, it is not a big risk. For me it starts more similar to a Gewurztraminer and finishes as a medium sweet Riesling. Enjoy!!

Jim Barry Lavender Hill Off Dry Riesling 2015

|

Have always enjoyed a good Riesling but they seem to be few and far between; either too sweet or bone dry. This one falls slightly more into the sweet category as its name suggests, but it is not a sickly sweet. It has a delicate flavour and bouquet and is a lovely summer drink, with or without food. Have given a couple of bottles to friends and family and they too have savoured the flavour and enjoyed it.

Surprise

I am not usually a Riesling lover and pass on any bottles in a mixed order, however I loved the Jim Barry Lavender hill Riesling and am waiting for this one to appear again.

Sweet

Off dry is actually not very dry at all. In fact it is closer to sweet - just like the box says. Not my preference in a riesling, though may suit others.
