Sometimes it takes a big fella with big ideas to get a big winery happening. Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa Valley vigneron, a tradition he wears proudly on his sleeve. But his biggest success was kicking off his winery in 1988, a family owned business that has gone from strength to strength.
Big ideas and some bloody big wines – they pretty much go hand in hand. And while the blockbusters and ballsy reds are some of Australia's finest, there is also delicacy at play. From fresh whites to savoury reds, lively sparkling and back to the unctuous fortified that have won so many awards, Burge produces a wide, delicious spectrum of wines.
Burge has gathered together a flock of the best growers in the Barossa Valley, many with old, gnarled wines that contribute not only to his sought-after premium offerings but right through his value wines too. Burge doesn't like skimping to produce great value wines. It's exciting to see the sixth generation busy working in the family business, knowing that there are the big fella's big shoes to fill.
