Decanting - Wine Encyclopedia
No you're not some weirdo if you like putting your wine into strangely-shaped crystal or glass pourers. Decanting is an ideal way of opening up young wines and shouldn’t be limited only to reds. The more oxygen the wine gets, the more the wine reveals itself, though too much of course will spoil it. Decanting is a great way of getting wine looking good quickly. This applies also to older wines, where sediment may appear and you need to remove the murky build up. While designer decanters make you look really cool, using a large glass jug serves pretty much the same purpose – the idea is the same, its just how much you care about keeping up appearances! Oh, and make sure you do it slowly and steadily while you’re at it – its better for the wine and you hopefully won’t spill any that way! We heart decanters.
