Succulent Shiraz from McLaren Vale Masters!

This is one of WineMarket’s founding pillars: between constant repurchases from infatuated customers and personal office visits from winery head honcho Frank Mitolo, the Biscay Road holds a special place in the heart (liver?) of anyone who’s been around these parts for a while. Tragically discontinued, thankfully reborn in 2014, here’s our long-time favourite McLaren Vale Shiraz. If you haven’t tried it yet: welcome. If you have, welcome back.

The Bottom Line

  • Our most popular Shiraz label EVER!
  • McLaren Vale Shiraz to a 'T'
  • From long-time WM good guy Frank Mitolo
  • Labelled 'Biscay Road' but it's 100% Mitolo and 100% superb
  • Let it sit in your cellar for a good few years if desired!
  • Basket-pressed Shiraz - deeply detailed and richly weighted fruit, powerful, yet balanced, robust yet refined

If we could erect a big bronze statue of Frank Mitolo in our office we would. We might even go so far as to put some flowers and candles at his feet, burn a bit of incense, and make a bit of a shrine. A little weird sure, but that’s just how much we love this bloke. Why? Because he makes a wine as good as this just for us. That’s right, here and only here, is the place you can get this wine that has all the hallmarks of this powerhouse of McLaren Vale - deeply detailed and richly weighted fruit, powerful yet balanced, robust yet refined. This is A-grade stuff from a team at the top of their game and quite possibly the most popular wine on the site. If you've had it before you know you want more. If you haven’t, you owe it to yourself to see what the fuss is all about.

Winery Information
Sophia’s Vineyard is located at the southern end of McLaren Vale, nestled near the historic township of Willunga. Our Biscay Rd Shiraz is sourced from a mere twelve rows of vines situated in the south eastern pocket of this single block. The vines sit in loam over sandstone, intermixed with heavy Biscay clay, which gives the wine powerful fruit flavours. The combination of cool sea breezes and gully winds provide ideal conditions for growing fruit of intensity and balance. Aged in 100% French Oak, fermented on skins and both barrel and malolactic fermentation delivers a rich and fragrant Shiraz with a generous mid palate. Frank Mitolo's inspiration was an early interest and enthusiasm for good food and great wine. With three earlier generations of his family working as agriculturists and entrepreneurs, it is not surprising that (whilst heading an international horticultural business), Frank found the energy and passion to pursue his dream of creating world-class wines.

I'd rate this red 2 and half out of five, its easier enough drinking. It does need to be decantedbut its good value for money.

"Magic has gone"

Vintage: 2011

by
When Winemarket introduced us to this wine two or three years ago, it knocked our socks off. We keep buying it to see if the winemaker recaptures the magic. That has not happened, but at $88/doz, the 2011 is still one of the best value reds in the catalogue. But a RRP of $22.00 a bottle? To quote the most famous line from "The Castle"---"Tell him he's dreaming"

I have had my snout in the WineMarket trough for a few years now, and this is one of my favourites. You know you have a problem when you keep a half bottle close at hand, and access it in emergencies. If no emergencies - create one. Resist the urge to take a slug straight from the bottle, as this wine definitely improves if left to settle and take a breath of air. Goes down well solo but certainly gets the show on the road with a roast of any description.

Nicely colored with a fruity taste and a hint of spice. Enjoyable to drink especially with a nice pasta dish though no too bad with a "medium rare"steak.
