Mystery Sauv Blanc From A Barossa Champ

Hands-on winemaking done so right. This winemaker-who-must-not-be-named (at this price at least!) is based in the Barossa Valley, but has ventured into the nearby Adelaide Hills for premium Sauv Blanc fruit that’s grown much cooler, and brings the kind of subtle complexity that its Barossa counterparts just can’t match. Back at the winery, it’s crafted into this fantastic drop, and our winemaker pal’s let us have a bunch of it for way less than the normal damage.

We just can’t tell you his name at this price!

The Bottom Line

  • MYSTERY label, only available classified at this (remarkable) price
  • Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc, from a champion Barossa maker
  • 93 Points – James Halliday
  • Hands-on, modern winemaking

There’s a good bit of top-level winemaking that’s gone into this: above-and-beyond kind of stuff that you rarely see in any Aussie Sauv Blanc. The juice is left on skins for a day or two, and a splash of the final blend is fermented on skins too – all for a touch of extra texture that you won’t find in any White at this price.

Flavour-wise, this drop is all about balance: a good whack of earlier-picked, herbaceous notes as well as the very tropical, floral highlights from the other end of the spectrum.

Great drinking, just we can’t reveal the label at this price – it’s so much of a discount that our mate’s brand might take a hit he can’t afford!

Yet again I have discovered another gem from the Adelaide Hills.

Extremely easy to drink, definitely my favourite.

i did not like this one at all. Was more like a wooded chardonnay. Not anything like the usual Adelaide hills wines. We disliked it that much we have returned the un-drunk bottles

Good value, Nice drinking.

A bit sweeter in style, not as tart as some

A very enjoyable sav blanc that I would re order, especially at the generous price of $10 per bottle. Great value.

Normally I stick to the Marlborough SBs, but I went out on a limb to try this SA drop. I was pleasently surprised that this beat all the NZ drops I've fried this year. Certainly I will buy more & have recommended it to my friends.
