Great value Barossa Shiraz
A real cracker of a wine produced form old vine Barossa material
Alex Peel winemaker - who trained under the Great Rod Chapman and Neille Falkenberg Both Ex Grange Winemakers
Big saving off RRP - Your price just $99 a case
It's true when they say there's no recipe for making great wine, it's just not that simple, but it certainly helps if you can gather together a lot of the key ingredients.
Darius and Pauline Ross at Ross Estate have done just that.
First you take a beautiful old vineyard and give it all the care and attention it deserves.
Then nab a young gun winemaker like Alex Peel and give him the chance to realise his potential.
Give him the best mentoring available. If you can find a couple of ex-Penfolds winemakers who cut their teeth on Grange like Rod Chapman and the legendary Neville Falkenberg, then that's even better.
Once that's all in place things should like after themselves.
The old cliché tells us the proof is in the pudding and it's pretty hard to deny these guys have got it right when you look at wines like the 2008 One Tree Hill Shiraz and North Crest Grenache.
These are typically Barossan reds–rich, opulent, packed with flavour and velvety texture.
At just $99 a case you'll be staggered by the quality.
Just don't ask for the recipe.

| Background: NORTH CREST 2008 ONE TREE HILL SHIRAZ
The vineyard from which these grapes were sourced is situated near the township of One Tree Hill, which is located about 200m above sea-level, north of Adelaide. The maritime climate makes this a perfect location for growing red grapes as the warm days of Summer are tempered by the gulf breezes that sweep across the ranges in the evening, cooling the fruit. |
| Colour: Inky red in colour with purple hues |
| Nose: the wine displays black cherries and raspberry, with licorice and toasty overtones. |
| Palate: A rich palate of blueberry and blackberry fruit, intermingled with spice and leather is supported by firm mouth-filling tannins. Completely delicious, this is a full- bodied wine that will offer immediate enjoyment, but will age with grace. |
| Highlights: North Crest Wines
Hailing from Ross Estate, located at the southern end of the Barossa, the North Crest range of wines reflects the true philosophy behind the label.
That is, wines that over-deliver in style and value , wines that are equally at ease on the kitchen table as they are at a five-course banquet.
North Crest wines are now crafted by Ross Estate resident Winemaker Alex Peel.
His youth belies his ability. Having spent a number of years at Ross Estate under the diligent tutelage of then Senior Winemakers Rod Chapman and Neville Falkenberg, both of Penfold Grange fame, he has a small cache of gold-medal s to his credit.
The North Crest 2008 Barossa Grenache and 2008 One Tree Hill Shiraz are yet further evidence of his talent. Alex has added his own touch in hand-crafting the wines with an edge that further enhances the Barossa tradition for which Ross Estate is famous.
Not unlike their ‘maker, they are wines that are easy-going but sincere, confident without being brash, and intelligent beyond doubt. |
