Australia’s flagship wine variety is Shiraz. It’s the most widely planted grape variety in Australia and is Australia’s most famous wine style internationally. It’s also the most popular style among Australian wine drinkers so while Paul Hogan was conning the Yanks that we are all throwing “shrimps on the barbie” and drinking Fosters, we were in fact cooking steaks, chops and bangers and pulling the cork on a great Australian red which, more often than not, was Shiraz.
