Fresh fruited medium bodied winner!
One day the clouds parted, there was a thunder clap and a beam of light and a humble BBQ cook in Australia suddenly had a light bulb moment and added beetroot to his hamburger. Something we had all loved, was suddenly, in the blink of an eye... slightly different. But it was good.
So too with wine. Yes, clouds may not part and a thunder clap and beam of light may not happen, but one of the great things about fermented grape juice is celebrating its different personality from year to year.
So when we rolled into the 2011 Biscay Road Shiraz, we danced a little jig and looked up into the sky with a nod and a wink. Sure, it was different to the same wine from 2008, but it was good, and it was tasty, and it begat plenty of happiness.
The wine is a fresh fruited, medium bodied winner with gentle oak and a light dusting of spice. Red berries and bright fruit flavours abound, it's so easy to like and fantastically drinkable.
And yes, we may mourn the passing of the 2008, but we celebrate the updated 2011 with glee. Again, we've knocked the top off the price, usually retailing for $264 but a bargain at just $98 a bottle. Raise a glass for diversity and dive into a case today.

Beef and vegetables in red wine sauce. |
|
| Background |
From the Sophie's Vineyard plot. |
|
| Colour |
Bright garnet red with purple hues reflective of youth |
|
| Nose |
Bright, lifted and quite pure aromatics, reflective of long, mild vintage. Red fruits, raspberry, cherry, almost floral with hints of spice, menthol, and pepper adding lift and complexity |
|
| Palate |
Fruits slightly darker here, with more blackcurrant and raspberry. There is a delicacy to the palate again reflective of a milder growing season. The flavours are fresh, bright and youthful and the structure elegant, with soft yet mouth filling tannins. Importantly, the wine is tied together with a drying, savoury finish - an ideal pairing with a tomato based pasta dish. |

| Highlights |
Biscay Road Shiraz has been fermented on skins and then sees both barrel and malolactic fermentation, before racking. The wine is then aged for 9 months in 100% French oak. |

| Winery Information |
Biscay Road is an export label of Australian cult favourite Mitolo. Mitolo Wines is a family owned business, borne of and led by the founder and owner Frank Mitolo's vision; to create a range of wines of individuality, integrity and utmost quality. Whether it is in the vineyard, or in the winery, or the work of the many different coopers who source and shape the diverse barrels which are used at Mitolo, each wine is nurtured and developed with a zealous passion that spares no effort or investment to ensure that the best of everything is brought together to make wines of purity, elegance and power.
Frank Mitolo's inspiration was an early interest and enthusiasm for good food and great wine. With three earlier generations of his family working as agriculturists and entrepreneurs, it is not surprising that (whilst heading an international horticultural business), Frank found the energy and passion to pursue his dream of creating world-class wines. |
