The best bubbles this side of Champagne

Cloudy Bay is arguably the most important producer in the history of New Zealand's wine industry, the bold mob that seduced the world with the sensory tsunami that is Marlborough sauvignon blanc.

But Cloudy Bay is no one trick pony, this place is a winemaking thoroughbred, blitzing the field every time they slip another wine into the starting gates.

And we reckon the best of them is Pelorus, their beautifully crafted, exceedingly elegant fizz made in the traditional Champagne style.

Now we love our French as much as anyone, probably even more, but when you taste this and realise you could get three bottles for the price of one ordinary French N.V the numbers just speak for themselves.

So the forecast for our sparkling consumption over the next few months is looking very Cloudy indeed.

Background: Cloudy Bay's sparkling wine label Pelorus. Marlborough's sunny skies and long cool summer days allow for a slow ripening process. These conditions are essential for achieving the hallmarks of a quality sparkling wine - elegance, crispness and complexity.

Palate: Predominantly Chardonnay, Pelorus NV is a blend of selected vintages. A fresh, aperitif-style sparkling wine featuring crisp apple flavours. After two years of bottle maturation, a nutty yeast complexity is developed.
Highlights: A lighter, fresher wine than the vintage label, thanks to a greater proportion of Chardonnay with Pinot Noir. After fermentation, the wine is matured for eight months in a mix of stainless steel tanks, French oak barriques and large oak vats. It spends at least two years on lees after blending and bottling. The wine has evolved from a very weighty, yeasty style to a fruitier, creamier, more elegant methode. Gourmet Traveller Wine, Australia - Bob Campbell MW - Summer 2004 A rich, weighty and integrated wine, with a good soft texture and impressive length. Nice autolysis adds an appealing nutty complexity. This is a full-flavoured Methode, with plenty of character. Home & Entertaining, New Zealand - Bob Campbell - February 2004
