Yarra Valley
It’s easy to envy a Melburnian. When they’ve finally had their fill of sipping lattes in laneways, buying more black clothing and watching the seasons change in their lunch break, they can head for the Yarra Valley.
The Yarra Valley is a strikingly beautiful part of the world that would be well worth the journey even if the wine wasn’t worth washing your dog in. Fortunately for everyone, including your dog, the wines are outstanding.
Although the region’s wines were getting worldwide attention way back in the late 19th century, winemaking had tailed off by the time the now legendary producers like Mount Mary and Yarra Yering emerged in the 1960’s and 70’s.
Just like another naturally blessed place, Burgundy, chardonnay and pinot noir do amazing things in the Yarra, it’s cooler sites producing wines that strike a fine balance between elegance and intensity. Those in the know readily put the Yarra right up with Coonawarra and Margaret River has a home to Australia’s best cabernets and the region is forging brave new territory with shiraz and sauvignon blanc.
